The Potato Obsession, Week 1 Atkins.

As my readers all know, I am officially on the train to health.  I am not going to lie.  It’s HARD to do.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to run into a McDonald’s, Carl’s Jr, Taco Bell or Burger King this week and scream like a criminal with a gun “GIVE ME YOUR ENTIRE MENU, NOW!”  I am now realizing after 6 days that my body was 100% addicted to sugar and shitty carbohydrates.  Anything processed i.e., microwave food was a temptation too.  Why?  Because I am lazy.  Wait, I will rephrase that.  I HATE to prep and cook food.  As you can read in my earlier post, “Diet or Die!”  I despise it.  I miss eating “fun food.”  Now I am learning though that “fun food” is my road to a quick coffin.  Please see my refrigerator below.

Currently I am on the Atkins Diet.  It’s a low carb approach to help me to lose weight and keep it off.  Dr. Atkins talks about the types of carbohydrates that you need to control, how insulin plays with the diet and truly the complexities of carbs.  I had no clue how carbs are so bad for a person.  I am learning now.  I am reading the “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution” now.  I hope all my readers will RUN to the bookstore or find it on an e-book and starting reading it.  I am learning that Sugar (converts to fat) and starches are evil.  In future posts, I will delve into more about the diet itself as I learn.  Maybe my readers will learn more about it as well. 🙂

So what am I missing (craving) in the past 6 days during Phase I ( 2 weeks of this diet)?  Truly, it’s not the sugar as much as I thought it was. I am not a big fan of Soda, Candy or Cake.  I love frozen yogurt though.  That’s the only item on the diet I am missing.  It’s starches.  Not bread, rice or even pasta.  I have a love affair with Mr. Potato Head.  Ohhhh how I miss mashed, baked or fried potatoes.  The smell of it at a restaurant or if someone brings french fries in the office is a KILLER!  My Husband bought a small bag of red potatoes this week because he needs the starches.  He’s a thin guy (lucky!) so he has to eat them.  The past few days it’s been so hard that I’ve wanted to eat one of those potatoes raw.  Yes people it’s that bad.

Tomorrow is my weigh in and measurement check.  I am hoping that I’ve lost a few pounds with exercise.  This week I only walked because I wanted to focus on this diet for the first week to get a solid foundation of what I am getting into for the rest of my life.  Of course, I will be reporting that information along with photos of me tomorrow.  However, I’ve documented my food intake on diligently.  I find it’s a fantastic tool to track EVERYTHING.  Fat, sugar intake, calories, carbs and cholesterol.  I do have concerns about the cholesterol because I am eating meat, cheese and eggs.  I do plan in 30 days to have that checked to make sure that it’s working for me and not clogging my arteries.  Here are my screen shots of my food intake this week.  I told my readers I would be honest….so have fun reviewing that.

Now I did start taking supplements this week along with my multi-vitamin and calcium.  I am taking New Whey which is additional protein.  42 Grams to be exact.  I use this with 1 cup of Non Fat, plain greek yogurt, a VERY SMALL handful of organic berries, and ice to make my morning breakfast.  Please buy organic…it’s the best.  Usually with a hard boiled egg to go.  I am taking L-Glutamine power at morning and night.  It’s for supporting muscle mass/repair AND helps those of us with immune disorders. 1 teaspoon mixed with a small glass of water.  I want to say the taste is like bland Alka Seltzer with no fizz.  It’s not that bad.  I am finding it’s a natural laxative….LOL.

Here are a few photos of my dinners I’ve had this week.  As you will see: it’s not that bad.  I am actually eating healthy.  I have to say I actually like it.  The food is tasty…of course my Husband is a fabulous cook.  If I did it…I would be eating burnt everything.  Seriously, not joking folks.  Also, my Husband and I are spending more time together planning meals and talking about other things besides work.  Nice.  Not going to lie though….I wish there was ice cream after dinner.  Still miss it.

During this experience I will be writing more about the Atkins’ experience.  What I like and don’t like about it.  I will be incorporating more discussion about exercise (which I am doing now slowly – don’t want to kill myself) in this blog.  The main focus this week is to get educated and food healthy.  I’ve inspired someone to want to eat healthier – great!  If not, enjoy your potatoes and have one for me!  Happy Eating!
